the shaft. If you remove your driveshaft and the bearing seal on it is nice and smooth and it spins nice and freely you're fine. Mine was not that way. It still spun kind of okay, but the seal had some dimpling that could be seen from the bearings so it seemed like it might be on its way to having some issues. The new bearing was a big difference in how easy it spun so I was glad I replaced it. But if you don't have convenient or inexpensive access to machine shop than it might be worth it to pay more for a whole new driveshaft that comes with the new bearing. Bottom line is it's not absolutely necessary to replace the driveshaft/bearing, but because removing and replacing the pump is such a bitch, it can be good peace of mind to do it to avoid having to do the job all over again later. :-)
